Constructed in a restored rice silo, this site-specific installation utilized visual and audio components to explore language and the library as a receptacle of knowledge. The space was filled with table lamps mounted on wooden shelves, reminiscent of historic libraries, with printed scrolls threaded through the lamp shade frames. The text, rendered illegible, was appropriated from Japanese children’s stories. An audio piece by composers Anthony Brandt and Chapman Welch (the viewer listened with earphones) exposed language as both “communication” and “babble.”
